Starting solids is such a special milestone and full of learning (for both of you!). If you're about to begin this journey with your little one, here are a few gentle tips to help make the experience feel more relaxed and enjoyable.
Let your baby lead the way
Look for signs they’re ready: sitting up on their own, showing interest in your food, and grasping objects. There’s no rush — every baby goes at their own pace.
Offer variety
Think soft fruits, steamed veggies, different textures and colours. It’s not about how much they eat at first, but about exploring and getting familiar with new flavours.
Keep it safe and simple
Cut foods into soft, finger-sized pieces and make sure they squish easily between your fingers. This helps reduce the risk of choking while encouraging independence.
Family mealtime
Babies learn so much from watching you eat. Sitting down together helps build positive food associations and makes them feel included.
Embrace the mess
It will be messy — and that’s okay! Letting your little one explore food with their hands helps support their sensory development.
No pressure
If they’re not keen, that’s okay too. Some babies need a bit more time to warm up to solids. Follow their cues and trust they’ll get there.
Think iron rich
Ensure you’re including iron-rich foods like soft red meat, liver, or leafy greens as their iron needs increase from around six months.
Take it slow with new foods
Introduce common allergens one at a time and keep an eye out for any reactions. This helps make it easier to spot if something doesn’t agree with them.
Offer water with meals
A few sips of water in a cup is a great habit to start early — and supports healthy hydration as they explore solids.
Soak it all in
These moments are fleeting — messy faces, tiny hands grabbing food, those first surprised expressions at a new taste. It’s such a special chapter.
Watching your baby explore solids is something you’ll always remember — it’s not about doing it perfectly, but finding your rhythm together and enjoying the journey.
